The Committee, upon learning 1 the successful is^ue of the Lite examination, decided that, upon receipt of the ceitiiicates awarded by the Central Board, thr.-y would attend at the school, inviting the parents and tho«c interested to bo prchout to assist in making the presentations as itnpressivo as possible upon the children. The whole of the School Committee were in attendance yesterday afternoon, as well as a large number of the paieits and ladies from the vicinity. The Chairman (Mr Gwynne), in opening 1 the proceeding- •, baid :-- -Mr Munav, Ladies and Gentleman, and children — It is Avith. very great pleasure I have attended here to-day for the purpose of distributing the certificates, and I will take the opportunity of saying a few words to the children. I must compliment the master and teachers upon the highly creditable ex'wnination, one that I have not seen equal ed in any other part of the colony. I trust the standard of efficiency will bo fully maintained iv the future. To attain this object, I will point out the nece-sity of regular attendance above all thing*, and strict attention to your lessons whilst in school. The former matrer was very much in the hands of the parents, who could al-o materially assist the teachers by carefully insisting that at home the lessons for the succeeding day should be prepared. Mr G-wynne then proceeded to hand the ceitificates to the successful pupils as follows : — sth standard (one) — Frank Stewart, a very promising lad ; Ith standaid (two) — Bessie M irray aud Laura Salmon; 3rd standard — Eleven giiL> aud eight boys in this clast,. Two boys, ton* of Mr William Jones, obtained full marks for arithmetic. 2nd htandaid — Twenty girls and fourteen boys. 1-t standard — Eighteen girls and eighteen boys. Total of pupils who passed, ol giils and il boys. Grand total, 92 from a i oil of 1-3'), and out of 98 who piesentod tliem-elves before the Examiner. The presentation being over, the Chairman asked if iiny of the ladies, or gentlemen present wished to sTy anything to the children, whr-n Mr. Kuox suggested that, as Captain Booie was piesent. who was the Chairman of rheiiist School Corumitten, he should be leque-tcd to say a few word*. C iptain B^-re a irn" forward, and after spiking of the plea-anl business that had brought them together rhat day, conciastcd the fiist days of i\o Public Sohool with the present, and th.it at tlio time Mr. Kuox rofeired to, no one could have expected sutJi results iv the time, or that such opportunities would be open to the inKibic.iuts with such :i giod system, and in such a fine building as that they were then in. In regard to th n teaching, the progress his children had made during- the time they h id attended the School had been mo.st maiked, and reflected very highly upon the te.ichoi. H> trusted all the children would persevere and assist the Ma-tor in keeping up the high reputation the School vow stood in. Mr Knox then called upon theehildr n to give threo hearty cheers for the te.i her, and they weie hearty. Mr Murray replied in a very feeling manner, aud m reiterating a\ hat hid just fallen from the chairman, trusted the children and parents would not forget what had been said. So much <lpp3iided upon it. He regretted that some fourteen or fifteen children were absent on the examinition day, as he felt sure had they attended most of them would have pissed. The committee and parents might lely upon his best efforts, and he felt certain with their co- operation the next examination would be equally successful, and he trusted more would be prepared for the higher grades. Immediately upon the close of Mr Murray's remarks, youtc^ Stewart mounted upon a desk, and led three ringing cheers for the ladies and committee. The proceedings terminated with the National Anthem. Mr Bell music master, was present, and must be complimented upon the improvement in his branch. God Save the Queen was nicely sang, the different parts being taken up by the boys and that by the girls had a very pleasing effect.
