POLICE COURT, HAMILTOT.

Yesteeday. (Before H. W. Northcroft, Esq., R.M.) James Bast&ble, oharged on Friday last with unlawfully wounding his wife, and remanded, as the woman was unable to attend, was brought up yesterday for sentence. Sergeant McGovern asked permission to amend the charge to assault, prisoner pleaded guiltyHis Worship in passing sentence said he regretted very much that the Legislature had not given Magistrates sufficient power to deal with such cowardly blackguards, but he trusted ere long to see the law amended in this respect, and extended powers placed in the hands of Magistrates. Had he the power he would order prisoner to be flogged through the streets of Hamilton at a cart-tail. As it was, and taking into consideration the pleadings of his wire, and his promise not to do so brutal a thing again, the sentence of the Court was, that prisoner pay cost of the action, 18s ,6d, and bound over to keep-ihe t>eaoe towards his wife for a term of twelve months in his own recognisance of £50. The prisoner left the Court looking very crest fallen. Patrick Mulcahy, charged with being drunk on the night of the 4th pleaded guilty, Accused having been out on bail, appeared, .before the Beach in. an iutjoxi-

cated state, and consequently- Was remanded till Wednesday Bth. ' \ ' - Hugh McNally, ehargad with having CDmmitted a breach of the Public Works Act, 1876, section 100. by being drunk ■whilst in charge of a horse, pleaded guilty. Fined ss, and costs 7s.
