THE BOROUGH ELECTIONS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— l feel compelled iv self defence to take up my pen, as ray pocket is likely to be reached m a most unpleasant way by the action of our mgacious Hamilton Borough Councillors, and wishing also to draw the attention of my fellow burgesses to some things which ought to be looked into during this season of universal retrenchment. I have ascertained that the Borough rates, when collected, amount to something near £450, out of which ium #176 is paid for clerical assistance,
and I presume our clerk also charges for acting as Deputy Returning Officer, so that himself and the boy lately appointed by that augiiht body actually swallowup one-half or more of the rates, which, together with the cost of the lighting-, fuel, and stationery used at their long winded meetings, must leave exceedingly small margin for expenditure on the streets. Verily a change must take place, or the Borough perforce appear in a Bankruptcy Court ! The burgesses should oertainly see to it, that they get three more who have some common sense and business capaoity returned at the forthcoming election of Councillors ; if they do not, they will ore long regret their snpineness, for the old adage still holds good, " That fools rush in where others fear to tread." Trusting that the burgesses may take warning in time. — I am, &c, - Burgess,
