Mr. MACKIES ROYAL STANDARD CARRIAGE MANUFACTORY, AUCKLAND.
Waikato settlers in the habit of visiting Auckland, are all more or less cognisant of the existence of Mr Mackies extensive manufactory in Dnrham-street, Auckland. What is now the largest business of its kind in that city was established as long- ago as 1855 iv premises near the Union Bank, lfterwards the scene of operations was removed to Wellesley-street, but for the past two years the business has been eairied on in Durham-street. The institution has steadily grown with the times until it has now assumed very large proportions. The manufactory itself is 148 in length by 61 feet in width, all roofed and fitted up with the latest aopliances for carrying on the trade in all its branches, In the loAVor storey is situated the engine of six horse-power nominal, which supplies the motive power for <liiving the various machines. It is fitted up with all the latest approved appliances. On the floor are also the circular saws, automatic drilling, smoothing and boring machinery. The bending of shafts is also carried on heie the steam being supplied fiom the boilers. At the north end aro the forges an 1 furiwes for he iting the tires &c. On tho otheiside are the shops for making the wheels and bodies and carnages and drays while close at hand is a large stoi-e for seasoning timber. At the time of our visit the workmen were engaged on almost evry description of -wheeled vehicle and the quality of the work done was of the bc-t. There was also a very large and varied stock of carriage and dray appl'ances, such as lamp* &c, on hand In the show room were some splendid sample? qf the cmchbuikler's art, iv the shape of buggies and hand* som n s. M'«st of them to order. On the second storey are tho painting and triming shops where all the decorating work is carried on. Notwithstanding tne magnitude of the operations carried on, everything is done with so much regard to order anil method that Mr. Mackie is enabled to personally superintend every article turned out of his shops and customers may therefore rely with confidence on the excellence of their orders. As a proof of this it is sufficient to point to the numberless vehicles manufactured by Mr. Mackie in Auckland and which have withstood the wear and tear of twenty years, being in so far as workmanship is concerned as good to day as when first turned out. He has also gained^a large number of prizes at the various shows for articles of his Manufacture, including his well-known springs. Mr Mackie is about to establish agencies in Tasmania and New South Wale* for the supply of the requisite classes of timber; and having had considerable experience in the timbers of those colonies it may be expected that he will only introduce such as will tend to the further improvement of the quality of the goods made by him. He will also be prepared to supply the trade with these goods. With such a manufactory establibhed in our midst, where articles of so superior a description can be obtained at such reasonable prices, it would be strange indeed were we to go out of the colony to supply our wants. We would strongly advise all who are on the look out for wheeled vehicles before making thoir purchases, to pay a visit of inspection to Mr Mackies manufactory and to go to the tronble o* comparing the articles there produced with the flimsy American goods with which the country has been flooded.
