REWI.

We are requested to contradict the exaggerated report published in the New Z aland Herald of the illness of the chief Rewi and to say that although suffering from indisposition, the state of his health is not so bad as to cause serious unensi* ness. He is slightly paralysed in his loft hand, the cause being a bruise whick he received some time ago. Otherwise his health and spirits are good, and he is quite able to take exergtee,

We remind our readers of the importance of attending the annual public meeting of the Benevoleut Sociot.y, to be held to-inorvow in the Court House at three o'clock. It i> for tho public to pass the Recounts of the year's expenditure, to hoar and comment upon the proceedings of the Committee elected by them lust year, to eloct the new Committee with President, Secretary, and Treasurer, to enrol any new members who may be willing to join the Society, and to offer any suggestions they may think advantugeous to the working of the same. It i-Txiot fair to leave tho responsibility of this to a few who may be willing to devoto their energies to tho public good, while the majority stay away, and then (as we have had occasion to remark before) set on foot all the grumbling that one invariably hears after a meeting of the kind, which hns been poorly attended simply because so many people decline to exert themselves sufficiently to be present.

A meeting of the newly formed Chess and Debating Club will be held at Dciwson's hotel, Hamilton East, this evening at 7.30 o'clock, for the purpose of electing a president and to consider other matters in relation to the Club. It is earnestly desired that all those who take an interest in the objects for furtherance of which the Club has been formed will attend. The necessity for some healthful recreation for young men during the long nights of winter has already been pointed out, and we hope that no further recommendation will be required to secure a hearty support to the new institution.

For some time the police have had reason to suspect that sly grog* selling was going on in the Piako district, and from information they received they laid an information against Mrß. Coleman, who has a contract on the railway in the swamp. Yesterday the defendant appeared to answer the charge, and after hearing the evidence the Magistrate sentenced him to pay a fine of £25 and i costs. A full report of the case appears [ elsewhere.

Some amusement was caused at the enquiry into the late fire by a witness named Brown, who it appeared had been one of the first to see the flames, ard who had afterwards played a very prominent part in saving property from deatruction. Biown, anxious to prove his claim to be considered a hero related how he had gone into the building and saved a bnggj , laying hold of the shafts and drawing it out. Here he was interrupted by Mr. Cochrane who said the vehicle which had been rescued had no shafts. " Then" said Mr Brown " they must have been removed since." Mr Cochrane said the buggy was new and had not yet been provided with shafts. Mr Brown remarking that Mr Cochrane was very particular, said he had taken hold of something and turning around he addressed Mr Cochrane with " I beg your pardon sir but you are very smart." Outside th« hotel Mr Brown discovered a very belicose disposition and wanted Mr Cochrane to fight him, an invitation which it is hardly necessary to bay was politely but firmly declined.

Mrs and Misses Young, it will be seen by advertisement, intend opening a young ladies' boarding and day school at Cambiidge, and with that object have purchased the large house and grounds presently occupied by Colonel Lyon. fcJuch an establishment as this, where the young ladies of the district could obtain a fuperior education, has long been felt to be a want in Cambridge, and none better qualified to take the task of supplying such a desideratum could well have been found than these ladies. The Misses Young are especially well qualified for the duties of teachers, and have attained high positions under the Department of Education. With these and the concomitant advantages of a comfortable home, no necessity will now be experienced for seeking educational advantages outside the district, and the new establishment is sure of a large amount of support.

For the first time since Alexandra was a settlement its inhabitants can in» dulge in the luxury of a cheap loaf the four pound loaf being now only 'sevenpence, it never before being less than ninepence up to one shilling and twopence generally averaging a shilling.
