HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

, _ . -+ [BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.] [from oub own correspondent.] Wellington, Last Night, 11.35 p.m. The Native Affairs Committee recommended the Government to give To Whpro a «rant of land in compensation for land wrongfully confiscated. The 10 is nothing of any importance to chronicle, except Ihat Mr Seddon is rapidly becoming the bore of the For hours to-day ho twaddled away, and took up the runuing again after dinner. His theme was reiterated upon no general principle, and not pointing out how it was to be effected. At last he was s lent, and one of the first votes put before the House was for the reduction of West Coast services, in which part he resides, by £9,000. On this, Mr Seddon, who war ready to shed the last drop of his brother's blood in reducing expenditure, louOly declaimed against the injustice of reducing a sixpence in his district. The estimates are now going through pretty rapidly. The overland mail coach service from Tauranga to Napier is stopped. HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL. + _

General Fund Account. The Council then proceeded to consider Mi 1 F. Vialou's account — Cc Peat moved that it be not paid — Gr Price seconded the motion — Cr Jones could not see what reason there was for withholding payment of the account, seeing the conditions had been complied with. He moved as an amendment that the account be paid — The Mayor said the account had practically been passed for payment when they adopted the Coin.mittee's report recommending the puicha c of the furniture, provided 20 per cent was allowed by Mr Vialou — '-'r Peat said all the conditions had not been ' complied with, iuasmuch as the furniture had not been removed from the Council Chambers. — The Mayor asked if they were to refuse to pass an account smctioned by the full Council, simply because the furniture had not literally been taken out. He was not going to stultify himself. — Cr. Peat said the Ooun- il hail before resolved not to have the furniture. — The Mayor sjid two wrongs would not mike a right.— Cr. Jones objected to the payment of the account for the present, or until they had a full Council. — Cr. McGarrigle thought it better to postpone m itter than to have the account refuse 1. — The Mayor said it was better to te'tle it one way or another. — Cr McGarrigle then seconded the ame-id'i,ent. — For t ! ie amendment there voted Crs. MeGdrrig'e, Jones, Alullions, and the Mayor ; against, Crs. Peat, Price, and D ivies.. The amendment was consequently carried. Re Mr J. Uwynneth's account, £46 6s. — Cr. McGarrijrlo moved that payment be deferred. He considered that it Avas too much, and lie wised to defer it so that it could be taxed. The charge he considered was a most exhorbitaut one. They had made no bargain, and there was nothing to show how many days Mr Gwynneth had been at work ; no voucher of any kind. He considered that the charges ought to be cut down 100 per cent. — Cr. Davis seconded the motion, because the charge was rather heavy on the Borough and something ought to be taken oft. He believed that they could have got the job done for about CIO. — Cr. Peat asked if Mr Grwynneth had bepn engaged to do any other work for the Council. — The Clerk said the Council had decided to engage him to superintend the widening of the bridge approaches. — Cr. Peat thought the present account would stop that. — The Mayor said Mr Gwynneth' s charge of two guineas per day was not unusual. — The Clerk laid the plan*, etc., of street levels prepared by Mr Gwyuueth on the table.— Cr. McGarrigle thought it would have been much better had they engaged an engineer at the first, by whom all this work could have been done. Ie was mere child's play to get a lot of plans diawn up in this way when they had no money to go on with. The amount paid for the plans, etc. , before them represented, with the other few incidental expenses, 5 per cent, upon an expenditure of £1000. It was simply ridiculous to pay aw ly money like this. — The motion was carried. Me Mr William Kellys account, £12 4s lOd, for gravel laid in Hamilton West. The Mayor suggested that in future the Chairman of the Works should certify to the coirectncss of the gravel accounts". — Cr. Jones thought the foreman of the works should every day .-end in a return to the Town Clerk of the number of loads of gravel deposited dining Ib. t day, ami the names of the streets upon which the same had been laid. — The account was referred to the Works Committee to be paid, subject to their approval. Several othei small accounts were also passed for payment.

Special Fund Accounts. The followiug- accounts against the Special Fund were passed for payment : — H. Brett, bridge tickets, £5 Os Gd ; J. Thorpe, ereoting bridge sign-boards, £1 12s Gd ; stove for bridge-hou^e, £1 10s; J. Webber, fixing- same, 188 Gd ; Jackson, half-ton coal for toll-house, 10s Gd; toll collector's salary for tho June month, £10 ; Lyon and Blah*, for lithographing debenture book, £10 7s 6d. An account for £2 7d 2d, from Mr J. K. McDonald, for supplying puriri po&ts, was referred to the "Works Committee. It was resolved that the services of Mr Daley as bridge toll collector be retained for the ensuing month. The Mayor drew attention to the state of the bridge approach on the west side. He wished to know whether the Works Committee desired the assistance of any of the other Councillors. Cr. Price did not think this necessary. He thought everything necessary was being done. The Council then rose.
