The Hotel Fired.

The police opened up a heavy fire on the hotel from the front and rear. Kate Kelly, at this juncture, came on the scene, but the only expression which escaped her lips was the one uttered in heart-broken accents, "My poor, poor, brothers." The chared remains of Dan Kelly and Hart were found amongst the debris by the police, and buried without an inquest.

The most thoughtful journalists now allow contributors to the waste-basket to write on both sides of the sheet.-— Graphic. A curious statement has been narrated in the Gardeners' Chronicle, of Oct. 6, 1879, in which it is said that a spikelet of oat came out from a head of wheat. On exaniinatiou it appeared that the stalk of oat had twisted itself round the ear of ' wheat when both were very young, and they had grownup in close apposition — the chaff of wheat completely hiding the stalk of oafc, which was at last, by some accident or violence, snapped from its parent and left clinging to its supporter, all trace of its prigin being hidden, Balfour sx?yB; —"Such differences are not incompatible with the idea of a oommon oiigin, and moreover, there is always a tendenoy to retuvn to the original .type. By cultivation, however such varieties are sometimes perpetuated; sometimes varieties of the cereal grains and of culinary vegetables have been produced, by propagation, so as to constitute permanent races."
