HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The regular monthly meeting of the Finance Committee was held at the Council Chambers last night, at which were preeont His Worship the Mayor, Cvs. Vent, Jones, Drivi«, MoGarrigle. and Vialou. Certain accounts werp passed for payment. Some discussion took place in reference to the conditions on Me-srs. Livingston and Booth's contract. The Clerk informed the Council that there were no stipulations in the specifications about the percentage to be paid during the pro. gress of the work. It was however resolved that as the contract had not boon completed, 15 per cent, only should be paid the contractors.

Vialon's Little Bill. Mr Frank Vialou's account for £7 18s 10(1, less 20 per opnt. reduction, which had been agreed to at a former sitting, was then brought forward, when Or. Peat requested thatCr. MoGarrigle's amendment in connection with this matter at a former meeting be read, and as the wording of this stipulated that the furniture be removed, &c, Or Peat remarked that as this had not been done he should object to the accounts being passed: This was aeconded by Cr. Davis. Cr. Jones said that although on a previous occasion he had voted against retaining the furniture, he failed to see the object of Cr. Peat' a action, and would therefore move ' ' Thac the account be passed." Cr. Vialou, in speaking to Cr. Jones' amendment, said he could not have thought that any Councillor would have shown such personal spleen as Cr. Peat had done in this matter ; that the matter had been freely discussed previously, and, as he thought, definitely settled.

Clearing Out. At this juncture (Jr. Peat roso from the table, followed by Cr. Davis ; this left the Council short of a quorum, and the business was thus abruptly brought to a close. The Clerk received instructions to call a fresh meeting for Thursday next, and to word his notice paper to this effect : — "That in consequence of the insufficiency of Councillors, through the action of Crs. Peat and Davis, a meeting of the Council U called for Thursday next at 7 p.m."
