WAIHOU.

We were much disappointed here on Saturday. The Waitoi Football Club 1) rving bent a challenge to the Th.unes Foothill Club to pi iv thorn hero on the jHh, bub no auswer was received ; however, the players from Pi.ikn, thinking all was right, c.uno over expecting a game, but were obliged to letuni uiibati-fied. The proverb w»y j , "It never r<iin.s but it pours," and so it was last Sunday. Mr Cakkr, our vj.siting clergyman, had liofc been for four mon Lhs,ha ving b(- en prevent ed bv foul weather on hi<> last trip in April. Tfmvever, he turned up at 10 p.ai. on S.itiud.iy, 'Hid found a Mr Jaynes, a ''Christian missionary," from the Thames, hud arrived, and was picpaiel to hold se'viee at 11 a.m., .so we had two bervioes within three hour , and now we have to wait fo another month or two before we have another. After Divine .service we had a church meeting, and a committee was formed, consisting' of Mr Parr, parsons' warden, and Mossis Collins and J. B. Smith, cominitteemen, and a resolution was passsed, asking the Bishop to arra 1 ge for a monthly vi-.it from a clergyman, and a hope was expre^od that lay sorvices might be held on the ot r er Sundays. We are glad to notice settlers houses going up on the Richmond block at the head of the river, and that more men are taking up blocks of land under Government on the deferred payment system. There are also signs of unmistakeable prosperity about here. Messrs Millar and Parr are doing a great deal, and near to them Messrs. Maclean having a big piece of land burnt off, sown, and harrowed, which is cloiug well. Mr Collins, the able manager of Lark worthy 's estate is making the desert bloom as the rose, and Messrs J. B. Smith and Moon are bringing under cultivation a good many acres of fern land. The bridge over the Piako river on the road from here to Morriusville which is rather below the level of the road at each end, and therefore very wet, muddy, and slippery in rainy weather, is to be battened to prevent horses from slipping, and augur-holes bored to let off the surface water. The swamp road laid off by the Engineer to the Board, Mr T. G- Sandes, is standing very well, and is a credit to all concerned. — (Correspondent. )
