Native news is unimportant. Tawhiao has returned from Kawhiao to Hikurangi, somewhat improved in health. The Rev. Wi Patene (William Barton), of Karakaiiki, was met by Honana Maioha and a lot of Hikurangi natives at Kaipiha yesterday, to tangi (condole) with him on the death of his wife. Honana informed me that a report had reached them that the Government had determined to cease road making at Parihaka. 1 informed him that was news to the Europeans. I notice that in all the districts the pheasants are represented as being scarce and shy. In the King country they are plentiful, and lie very close on account, I imagine, from their being so little molested.
