Cambridge Athletic Sports.
The Cambridge Athletic Club held their annual meeting on the Queen's Birthday in one of Mr Sharp's paddocks. There was a good attendance considering the weather, which was anything but enjoyable to the spectator^. The ground may be said to bo in f liv condition, but necessarily slow after the late rains. The fir-t event was 150 Yards Miiden, won bv R >bert^, with Brindlo second. Fergusson and Macfarlatie nUo ran. Only for Brindle runninsr out of line this would have resulted in a tlead h<>at. 200 Yards ,M oiis only N won easily by Dick OBrien, a half -cist. 100 Yards (13 entries) ; 5 only appeared at the starting 1 post and a splendid race ensued between Keeping a.n r l Roberts. The latter reached the tape firt>t ; Chappell third. Hop, Step and Jump ; won by Gr. McNeish 200 Yards (12 entries) ; 9 responded to the bell. McKitinan (scratch), Brindle (6 yards), H. A. Keesinu: (6 yards), Jas. Ferg;u>son (8 yards), .T. CampbeU (8 yards), Whitehouse (9 yards), Piro Rehia (9 yards), Roberts (14 yards). Roberts was never caught ; Piro Reliia second, and "Whitehouse third. 159 Yards (boys under 15 years) ; 5 ran; McMillan coining in first Maori second, <md Camp third. 300 Yards Hurdles (for Maoris only) : five ran ; won by McNeish, with Jack OBrien second. 100 Yards (boys under 12) : six ran. Arnold, first ; Camp, second ; Maori, third. Camp, who was in the previous boys' race, ran pluckily and well. Throwing the Cricket Ball : Shans first, and Hunt second. Hunt also carried off the long and high jump honors. 300 Yards Hurdles : five entries, and all presented themselves —F. Pilling (scratch), J. McNeish (6 yards), McKinnon (8 yards), Brindle (14 yards), J. Fergusson (20 yai'ds). McKinnon won somewhat easily with Pilling second. Vaulting with the Pole : Pilling, first ; J. MclSTeish, second. 440 Yards : seven entries and five started — Fagan (scratch), McKinnon (14 yards), H. A. Keesing (20 yards), James Fergusson (24 yards), A. Whitehouse (30 yawls). Fagan picked up his men in fine style, and reached home first. Keesing and McKinnon had a game tussle for second place, breasting the tape almost {simultaneously. It was given in favor of Keesing. 880 Yards : four appeared out of five entries — Fagan (scratch), McMillan (33 yards), J. Campbell (55 .yards), J. Me Farlane (70 yards). Fagans abilities were either over-estimated or he was resen ing himself, for he never showed near the front. McFarlane, first ; McMillan, second ; both ran well. The Mdc brought out all the entries (five) — Fagan (scratch), McMillan (50 yards), J. Campbell (80 yards), 11. A. Keesing (100 yards), and A. AVhitehouse (175 yards). They passed the post in the following order: — Ist lap — Whitehouse, Keesing, Campbell, McMillan, Fagan ; 2nd lap — Whitehouse, McMillan, Fagan, Campbell, Keesing ; 3rd lap — Whitehouse, McMillan, Fagan, Keesmg ; 4th lap — Fagan, McMillan, Whitehouse. Whitehouse made a game spurt ay the finish, but without effect. The Cambridge Reed Band was on the j ground and added to the day's pleasure.
