WAIKATO CAVALRY.— TE AW AMUTU TROOP.

At » special meeting of the, troop, held at the Public Hall on Monday, for the purpose of electing a captain and a first lieutenant and sub-lieutenant, lieutenant Rutherford occupied the chair, and stated that Major Jackson was compelled to be *in Auckland. A letter from the Major was read by Drill-Instructor Carley, in which that gentleman expressed regret at his unavoidable absence, and announced that had he been present he would have had great 1 pleasure in proposing Lieut. Rutherford, who had of late actually performed the duties. On the motion of Sergt. - Major Higginson, seconded by Trooper William Bond, Lieut! Rutherford was elected captain of the troop unarii•mously. The following gentlemen were then duly proposed and seconded as candidates for the rank of first lieutenant, viz. :— Sergt. -Major Higginson; Sergt. R. Bruce, Trooper J. (J. Grierson. Sergt. Robert Bruce was elected. The following gentlemen were then duly proposed and seconded for the rank of sub-lieutenant : — Corporal Geo. Wilkinson and Trooper Grierson. The result of the ballot was : Corporal Wilkinson, 36 ; Trooper Grierson, 23: thus securing the sab-lieutenancy to Corporal Wilkinson. It was arranged that there should be a short parade on the Queen's Birthday; (May 24th).
