CAMBRIDGE FARMERS' CLUB. [A telegraphic precis of this appeared in our last issue.]

The usual monthly meeting of the Club was held at the Club-house, Cambridge, 011 Monday last. The following members were present : — Messrs E. Maclean, (president, in the chair), A. A.Fanthan, John Fisher, (i. E. Clark, Kalender, R. Hunt, Alwill, C. J. Storey, J. P. Campbell and Capt. Runciman. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, Mr. W. H Grace who was nominated for membership at the previouns meeting wn» balloted for and elected Unanimously. The Secretary r*portwtf TnaxtJffpt. ISf§ete' had intimated to him that he woivld hot be able to read his promised essay on inoculation. Capt. Bunciman said the committee appointed to report on the proposed Drainage Bill had not been able to give the matter the consideration due to it. Messrs Campbell, Storey and himself had met that day and lnd drawn up a hurried report which Mr. Campbell would read. Mr. Campbell then read the following report : — Your committee have been unable to gi\ c this subject the consideration that its importance demanded, the members of the committee lning at a great distance from each other, it has been found impossible to hold the necessary meetings, required to fully discuss the subject. Your committee .110, ho\\e\er, agreed th.it the Act docs not tally meet the lequirements of this district, and that it has been framed more with a \ie\v to pro\ ide a means of bon owing mono) from Government, than as a method of enabling propi ictors of adjoining swamp lands to assist cv.li other in reclaiming the same, and in compelling those who benefit by the e\pcnditure of mono)* in chaining a block of country (part of which the) may own) to contribute a portion of the cost. The Act itself, \\ Inch may be a desirable one to pass along with the Act framed for the purpose mentioned, appears only to apply to land under the Transfer Act, which your committee think is a mistake, as this would limit the operation of the Act to a comparatively small aieaot countr). Your committee are of opinion that if the Public Works Act, 1876, Pait 7, wore amended by the addition of a tew clauses ombod)ing the \ie\vs expressed, that would answer all the purposes winch we require. In regard to boundary diains your committee are of opinion that the insertion of a clause in the Font ing Act, providing for the dnision of the cost of makiug and maintaining such chains between adjoining properties, would not only be desirable but effectual in meeting the difficulty that exists with regard to drains of this nature. In other woids, your committee think that boundary drains ought to be consideied as fences, and come under the same regulations that apply to them, i.e., to be constructed and maintained at the joint cost ol the adjoining proprietors. Un the motion of Uapt. Runciman the report was adopted and ordered to be forwarded to Mr Murray, M. FI.R at whose request the Club had taken the matter into consideration. Mr Campbell said he had given notice at last meeting to move that the Club obtain an analysis of the soils in various parts of the district but having regard to the fact that at present the minds of members were so much occupied with other matters and looking also'at the smallness of the attendance he asked permission to withdraw his motion for the present. The nece^sary permission was aocorded . The following gentlemen were nominated for membership :— By Mr John Fisher: Messrs E. Allen (Pukekura), "William Tucker (Pukerimu), and Thomas Norris (Taotaoroa). By Capt. Runciman : Messrs. E. M. Edgcumbe and A. Swarbrick. G-. E. Clark gave notice that he would at the next meeting nominate a committee to make arrangements for the next ploughing match. This was all the bnsines and the meeting shortly afterwards terminated.
