SOUTH AUCKLAND CATTLE BOARD.
[Ai telegraphic' preetii of this appeared in' oar last issue.] A meeting of the Board was held in the Cambridge Parmors' Club on Monday afternoon. Present: — Messrs E. Maclean (chairman), Fautham, and Storey. Mr Naden, M.R.0.V.5.L., attended, and the following 1 gentlemen were present as visitors: — Messrs Clark, J. Fisber, Ahvill, and Captain Runciman. - The Chairman said he was glad to be able to state that no fresh cases of pleuro had been reported. There were all sort of wild rumors afloat ; one of which was to the effect that a settler in tho Waitoa had kiffed&d head of cattle infected with pleuro. He was, fortunately, in a position to contradict this story, on tho authority of a gentleman who had that day visited the property in question. A telegram was read from the Government, asking if the Board had any objection to the whole of the South Auckland District being proclaimed an infected district ? The Chairman thought such a step would be very unwise. They had done all that was necessary for the present. In many parts of the district the disease had not yet broken out, and it would be a pity to inflict any unnecessary hardship upon settlers. The other members agreed with the Chairman, and it was resolved to reply to the letter when the Inspectors at present in the Waipa and Waitoa districts had sent in their reports, The Chairman said it was a very pleasing circumstance that none of the people in the infected districts had made any complaint whatever to the Board. Ihey all seemed to be perfectly satisfied with the action the Board had taken. It had been said up till within the past few days that Pleuro did not exist in the district. Mr Mitchie however assured him that not only did the disease exist, but it existed in a very virulent shape. Any doubts anyone might have had ought therefore to be set at rest. Mr Allwill hoped the Board had recommended as successor to Captain Steele, some gentleman for the Northern portion of the district. The Chairman explained that they had i-ecommended the appointment of the Chairman of the PlaKo County Council. They saw the force of Mr Allwill's suggestion, but at the last meeting Mr Clark had pointed out to the Board how desirable it was that the members should live close together, or within easy reach of one another, so that in cases of emergency they could meet and take prompt measures. This was rendered all the more practicable now that the Board had inspectors all over the district to attend to matters of detail. Mr Allwill expressed himself satisfied with tliis explanation. He wished however to let it be as widely known as possible that those who signed the petition requesting Captain Steele to resign, did so with no intention of seeing him replaced by a Cambridge settler. After the discussion of some matters of minor importance, the Board adjourned.
