Afghans Routed. Calcutta, April 23. Intelligence has been received of the resumption of hostilities in Afghanistan. A severe attack was made upon General Stewarts force, on the 19th instant, in the vicinity of Ghuzni by 15,000 Afghans. A serious conflict ensued, ana resulted in the defeat of the enemy \\ith heavy loss. The British lo&s is unknown. General .Stewarts vanguard entered Ghuzni on the 20th.

New Zealand Loan and Metcahtile Agency London Market. Report., . Lomjon, April 21. Wool. — The sales opened with spirit on the 20th instant at an average advance of lil to IUI per lb. on last tales' prices. The opening catalogue contained 8000 bales. The sales comprise about 380,000 baled ; 30,000 bales have been bent to the manufacturing districts direct. Competition by both home and foreign buyers is active, but trade in the manufacturing districts is not so good. Continental markets are lightly stocked. Greasy has advanced Id per lb. Clothing, washed, has .advanced 2d pec lb. Scoured has advanced Id to Hd per lb. since last sale. Crossbred, superior greasy, and superior combing, washed, have advanced id to Id per lb. Lambs : Market unchanged. The sales will close on the 12th June, and the next sales will commence on the 19th August. j , , Tallow is dull of sale. Mutton is worth 33s 6d and beef 32s per c\\ t. The Freezing of Meat. Melbourne, April 24. The prospectus has been ibsued of the Free/ing Company under rhe dry air process, with a capital of i'loo,ooo. The sum of £10,00 has already been subscribed, and the company will commence operations aa boon as the subscriptions amount to £50,0iJ0. A dipcheiia has made it appearance in Sandhurst.
