TO THE EDITOB. Sib, — I notice in your issue laafc Tuesday a reply from " Fair Play, " to " Verbum Sap." The latter is at a loss to know why indisci-etion can pile itself tier above tier over its own weakness. I say weak ness because I fail to see any sense, drift or meaniug, other than ohagrin, in "Fair Play's" moaning and indiscretion, which, for the sake of his protege silence would h.ave been much wiser. "Verbum Sap" did but hint gently where required, and instead of wisely leaving indiscretion and almost Billingsgate clatter "cam skelping rank and file.' ' The only portion of "Fair Plays letter which requires material notice and correction is where it says that "the only theft perpetrated, etc., is the bone business in the pub." This in common every day language I wish him to understand is not correct, And I am in a position to state emphatically that there have been thefts committed 'in Alexandra— and most flagrant cases too— which could have better engrossed the attention of our local constable than rabbit-hunting, and the luxury of rabbit pies ; and for the proof of these cases, |there is no question that Superintendent Thomson will be the best judee. That Constable McLeod is a respectable man, so far as. I have known of him, I fully believe. My letter did not question that. But that he has proved himself efficient and a terror to evil-doers — gracious m© !— one oanuot help but smile

at the assertion. I think such language is not only sappy, but somewhat soapy too.
