TUKUKINO AND THE KOMATA ROAD.
Some time ago we announced on the best authority that the chief Tukukino had granted permission to the Thames County Council to onrry a road through his land to connect the Thames and Waikato. We also mentioned that the Government had granted a sura of money to carry out the work. Since that time tho EcraUVs Thames correspondent has more than onoe contradicted the report. In Monday's issue the Herald reports that Tukukino declares that nothing shall he done, and that the road is to remain as it was. We have never placed mu h reliance on the Herald's information, and our doubts would appear to bo confirmed in this instance by a telegram received last night from Grahamstown, and published in our telegraphic column", to the effect that the County Council has received £4500 from the Government, £3000 of which is for the construction of the road through Komata to Paeroa, the remainder to be spent on the Thames-Katikati road. The Government in forwarding the above amount state their intention to afford means of dircot communication from the East Coast to the Thames and Waikato. However much our Auckland contemporary might wish to see the whole of the trade of the Upper Thames District diverted to Auckland, rro feel assured that the opening of the road to the Thames will, by the settlers in the Waitoa and Waihou, be regarded with feelings of the liveliest satisfaction.
