CABLE MESSAGES. [By Electric Telegraph.] The English Elections. London, April 5.
The returns of the elections, so far as is known," give 271 Liberals and 141 Conservatives, showing a majority of 130 for the Liberals. The total number of seats gained by the latter is 59, and their majority is already sufficient to make them quite independent of the support of the Home Rule party. The Right Hon. Mr. Gladstone has been elected for Midlothian by a large majority. It is generally thought quite probable that Mr. Gladstone will not accept office should the Liberals come into power. In the elections now proceeding the net Liberal gains are sixty-two seats. Dublin returns: One Home Ruler and one Liberal. The Hon. R. Lowe has been re-elected for London University. The Tunes, in a leading article, says it has reason to believe that the Ministry will resign before Parliament meets. The election for Middlesex took place to-day, and resulted in the return of the former members, Lord George Hamilton and Mr. 0. C. Cooper. Mr. Herbert Gladstone, a son of the ex-Premier, who contested the election, was defeated.
