PLEURO-PNEUMONIA AT THE SWAMP COMPANY'S STATION.

In consequence of information received, Mr A. A. Fanthani, (member of the South Auckland Cattle Board) and Mr Inspector Runciuian, acting under instructions from Every Maclean, Esq., Chairman of the Board, proceeded to the Swamp Company's station on Thursday afternoon. On arrival they found the work of inoculation being carried on, 2500 head having been operated on. The following official notification was handed by Inspector Runciman to the Company's Manager, Mr Henry Reynolds. To Henry Reynolds, Esq. Having entered the station known as the property of the Waikato Land Association and found that the disease of pleuro-pneumonia exists among the cattle on said station, I hereby give you notice that such is declared an infected place within the meaning of the Diseased Cattle Act, 1871» and Amendment Act, 1873. John Runciman, Inspector of Cattle and Sheep, Waikato. Ist April, 1880. On their return, and on their reporting the state of affairs to Mr Every Maclean, that gentleman immediately sent atelegram to Auckland to Mr Naden, M.R.C.V.S.E., instructing him to come up at once and make a report on the Company's cattle, in order to ascertain whether pleuro-pneumonia actually does exist among the herd. Mr Naden arrived in Hamilton yesterday by the midday train, and, accompanied by Inspector Runciman, proceeded forthwith to the Company's station. We shall await his verdict with grave anxiety, a feeling which will be reciprocated by every settler in Waikato, and indeed throughout New Zealand. A meeting of the Cattle Board is to be held to-day at noon, by which time it is anticipated Mr Naden will have concluded his enquiries, and the position will be calmly reviewed and decisive measures adopted. In the meantime we would draw the attention alike of large and small cattleholders to the notification issued by the Cattle Board re inoculation which appears in our advertising columns. We trust all unnecessary scare will be guarded against, and that the position, if as serious as now stated to be, will be faced in a manly British manner.

Since writing the above, Mr Naden, we learn, has returned to Hamilton from his inspection of the Company's station, and pronounces the cattle to be undoubtedly suffering from epizootic pleuropneumonia. An application will be made to-day to the Cattle Board, at their meeting, for authority to slaughter one or two animals for purposes of post mortem examination. We can but reiterate the sentiments expressed before.
