HAMILTON CHORAL SOCIETY.
TO THE EDITOR. Si a> — As misapprehensions appear to exist in the minds of some people ou certain matters connected with the Society, I beg your permission to explain the points in question; and first, as regards the change in the conductorship. The change has been arranged by the committee with the knowledge and consent of our late conductor vMr Culpan) ; and solely on account of his protracted absence from, and the uncertainty attending his return to Hamilton ; and I may take this opportunity of expressing the obligations the Society is under to Mr Culpan for his unwearied exertions in its conduct hitherto. Secondly: I am told, to my surprise, that the Society is denominational in its character. To this I reply that it was organised at a public meeting called by advertis3ment, at wh'ch meeting the officers were elected and the rules for its conduct adopted. These rules provide that the committee and conductor shall be elected annually by the members. This has been done. The only object the promoters have had in view from the commencement has been to unite the whole of the amateur musical talent of Hamilton in the praotice of sacred and secular music, without any reference to denomination or creed. Now that the Society has been restarted it rests with those who are interested in music to decide, by their support or otherwise, whether it shall be carried on. Ido not suppose it is a matter of vital importance to anyone whether it lives or dies : but for my part I think such an organisation in a place like Hamilton is productive both of instruction and amusement to the members, and useful in assisting in the various performances got up for charitable purposes. — I am, &c, Chas. Laishlet, Hon. Sec.
