THE PARIHAKA MEETING. [UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
Wellington, Wednesday. The Parihaka half -yearly meeting was held to-day. The number of natives present is estimated at 2,000, and about 60 Europeans. Great preparations have been made in the way of food; about 50 pigs and 100 sheep having been slaughtered. There are 200 large b;».skets of bread 300 kits of melons, and 30 boxes of tea. After the food had been distributed, Te Whiti spoke. His words were not very definite and throughout there was nothing but peace. Tie referred to the presence of the Constabulary on the Plains as a proof that the Europeans desired war, and to make the natives fight for the laud, but as the land belonged to the intivet. they had no necessity to fight. There were two things he wi.shed to state, fii\>t that the floods have bubsidod, and will never again come on the earth, and secondly that the natives were not to step beyond the outside of what hu had apportioned or measured. Parihaka was u safe and sure refuge for all the natives.
