IMPROVEMENTS IN KIHIKIHI.

THis inhabitants of this township, so pleasantly and beautifully situated on the rising 1 ground near the confiscated boundary, and overlooking the wide expanse of fertile country still " locked up," are possessed by a very laudable desire to improve and beautify the place, no less than by the belief that their infant town is destined to become an important centre of trade when the march of civilisation shall have advanced unto the heart of the unknown country beyonl. The most noticeable improvement, and in many respects the most important, is the work of the Town Board, and consists of the planting of pines on either side of the main street, a practice which obtains in one or two other places, and one which ought to be followed with advantage m all our Waikuto towns. The treas in Kihikihi are only some two years planted, but have already attained considerable size, and give, promise of providing in a very few years a very grateful shade and shelter. Several cottages are in coursa of erection in different parts of the township, and the contract for the building of a new Koman Catholic Church has been let. The timber is on the q ound and the work is expected to be commenced at once. But the adi dition to the architecture of Kihikihi I which will excite the most interest will undoubtedly be the mansion about to be built by the Government for the Ngatimaniapoto Chief ftewi, who hencoforth intends making his home there. The house which it ia intended shall be a very extensive one, will also possess some claims to style and grandeur. The house was promised by the late Government and the members of the present cabinet have, perhaps, wisely, determined to carry out the intentions of their predecessors. In any event, such a step will have the effect of cementing our friendship with the Chief. The site of the bui'ding has been selected near the south-western extremity of the township, opposite Mr Farrell's Store. The country round Kihikihi, taking the dry weather into account is looking very well. Bain is however much needed.
