DRAINAGE WORKS AT CAMBRIDGE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I see by Saturday's Times that the Cambridge Town Board are about lo drain the upper portion of this township into our beautiful lake of spring water in the centre of the town, and thereby turn it into a pool of filth, from which, will arise sickness, disease, and death. It is not long since that ye had a low fever amongst us that carried away some of our most useful residents ; and if this work is carried out we shall soon have more sickness and death. Our churches are built within a few yards of this lake, and the Church of England is now about to build a new and beautiful church at great cost ; but would the people come to worship so near to a denied pond, and sit and breathe the foul air arising therefrom in a warm climate like this? Prevention is better than cure. Will the people submit to such a wrong being done? Will the Government permit such a beautiful property to be destroyed and turned into a nuisance to the town ? I hope not ; it is now one of its ornaments ; if the Board would apply to the Government for it, and plant it round and make walks round it, and turn it into a recreation ground for the people, and keep its waters clean and pure, they would add to the health and enjoyment of the inhabitants of the town and district, and gain their thanks. Hoping that the Board will not go against the wishes of the people even if they have the power — I am, &c., William Reed. Cambridge, Feb. 1, 1880.
