THE CAMBRIDGE AND ROTORUA ROAD.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, — In reference to a portion of your leader of Tuesday last, in which you state that the prosecution of the Cam-bridge-Kotorua road wa3 mainly due to my exertions, I wish to make a few remarks. To Mr Whyte, the member for Waikato, is to be attributed the success which has attended the efforts to push on this colonial work. 'I hat gentleman was to my knowledge indefatigable in urging upon the authorities the importance of constructing a road through the centre of the Maori country, and he it was who finally arranged the matter. I need not say that I entirely sympathise with my colleague in bis efforts in this direction, and with him recognise the great saving which will be effected for the colony in \ the direction of defence expenditure, by providing such ready means of travel through Maoriland, and always have been, and will be, ready to afford him any assistance in my power; but he is the author of the undertaking, and to him belongs such credit as may attach to what I know he looks on as the performance of a duty. In conclusion, I perceive from your report that one gentleman is made to say at the late Cambridge meeting, that if after calling Mr Whyte a jolly good ! fellow "the meeting separated, nothing more would follow, and the matter would aleep." I can assure you from my personal observation of the member for Waikato that the hon. gentleman's character is quite the reverse of this. Ido not believe that, having put his hand to the plough, he will ever look back ; and I feel confident that the Kotorua road will be far on towards completion before the winter has finally set in.— l am, &c, F. A. Whttakee.
[We in no way wish to detract from what is due to the honorable member for Waikato ; we were simply reviewing the exertions of the member for Waipa, as we purpose doing, when favored with an opportunity, those of Mr J. B. Whyte. — Ed.]
