PIAKO. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
The meeting of householders in the Waitoa School district, for the election of a school committee was held on Monday as advo tised. Mr Brenmer, on being called to the chair, read the natice convening the meeting, and a report of the committee's procee-ingrs during the year, from which j it appeared that at the beginning of the year the average attendance at the school was 15. For some time in the middle of the year the average decreased to nine, but at the end of the year the attendance was as large as at the beginning of the year. At the beginning of the year the teachers income was at the rate of £100 per annum with residence ; but, owing to the small attendance at school he had only at the rate of £80 for the last half year. The Board of Education informed the committee in the month of July last, when the average attendance at the end of the June quarter was nine, that unless the attendance increased it would be impossible to maintain the school on its present footing. The numbers did increase very considerably, so there was no further communication with the board regarding the attendance. The inspector did not visit the school during the year. 1 About the middle of the month of January instant a letter was received from the board intimating that in consequence of the teacher hating received another appointment, it will be necessary to close the school temporarily until further arrangements can be made by the boardI may mention that the u tpro&sions of dissatisfaction were pretty forcible when it became known that the teacher had been appointed to another school, and our school was closed without the knowledge of the bchool Committee. The teacher i had left before there was time to convene i a meeting of the committee. People could not see the use of a behool committee, and on Monday the opinion was pretty general that it was useless appointing one However, after mature consideration the meeting did appoint a committee consisting of Messrs Alexander, Bremner, Charles McDonald, James Innes, Samuel Ticklepenny, James Rowe, John Barber and Samuel H arrell. At a meeting of the newly appointed committee elected Mr Bremner chairman, and Mr McDonald secretary and treasurer.
