STRANDING OF THE STEAMER PENGUIN.
TxxnuNOi., Tuesday. Whilb the steamer Pedguin, from Auckland, was coming in this morning, she was blown on the sandbank (opposite to where the s.s. Taupo lies) by a' strong gale. ( The steamer Staffa was immediately despatched to her assistance, and on arriving at the spot took on board the passengers and mails, and brought them to town safely. Efforts were then made to get the Penguin off, which were successful, and the vessel is now riding at anchor in the harbour. She sustained no injury, and should the weather moderate, will leave for the South this evening.
(FEOM A CORRESPONDENT.) Yesterday, 2.30 p.m. The Penguin entering the harbour early on Tuesday morning during the gale from the north east was driven on the sandbank. There was no difficulty in getting her off at high tide to-day. She sailed for the South this morning. Greatly exaggerated reports seem to have been circulated with reference to the affair.
