lEqual and exact justice to alt men, a Of whatever state or persuasion, religions or political. Here shall the Press the People's right maintain, Unawedby influence andunbribed by gain

Once agate Christmas Day has come round— Christmas Day with all its pleasurable associations ! Amidst the general callfco happiness, the bustle of the spirits, and stir of the affeotiohs which prevail at this period, yhafefcosom qwi wmwo w-

sensible 1 ? Christmas is indeed the season of regenerated feeling— the season for kindling, not merely the! firo of hospitality m the hall, but the trenial florae of charity, m the heart. The scene of early love again rises green to memory beyond the 3terile waste of years ; and the ideu of home, frnuftbt with the fragrance of home-dwelling joys, re-aniinatos the drooping spirit as the Arabian breeze will sometimes waft tho freshness of the distant fields to the weary pilgrim' of the desert. Christmas Day is perhaps the one day m fclie year on which you aro date to bo welcomed wherever you go, , having, as it were, the world all thrown open to you. It is «■ day on which two men — who perhaps all through the past year have been on bad terms— meet ing, will instinctively greet each other with more or less cordiality. Holding these views, this Christmas Day appears to us a particularly suitable occasion on which to address a few remarks to oar readers regard. Jng the differences — we may say at once jealousies— which so manifestly exist between the several districts m theyWaikatp. It is^ of coarse, not to be expected that a certain degree of fair, open, and honest emulation between neighboring centres should not sometimes degenerate into mere petty jealousy : so long as human nature remains what it always has been, — until the advent of the Milennium,— suoh thioga are inevitable — but they should be confined within bounds; they should not be suffered to take so great a hdld on a community as to positively shut the, eyes of that community to everything ontsideits immediate centre. Nothing strikesastrangerarnving m "Waikato 'more forcibly than the "ataod off the grass" manner m which a Hamilton man will speak of Cambridge and vice versa; indeed, so far is this nonsensical jealoasy carried, that a certain feeling is apparent between East and West Hamilton. Now, any sensible, man calmly considering -this fact over inusb arrive at one conclusion, — that which is taught by the fable of the handle of sticks. We do not wish to preach ; we do not wish, especially to-day, to say anything, however true, calculated to mar the hilarity of each and every hearth m Waikato, but it is our bounden doty as journalists to hold up the mirror of Truth. Not to cry " Peace, peace," when there is no peace, bat rather at all times and on all subjects to take our readers into consultation on matters affecting the Waikato ; and we submit that the unfortunate jealousies and bickerings to which we have felt it oar duty briefly to glance, are not least among such subjects. In wishing our readers' w A Merry (Jhristiiaa and a Happy New Year" we counsel the sinking of petty local jealousies. Waikato flails for " A strong pull, a long pull and a pull all togetlur.
