WAIKATO TURF CLUB SUMMER MEETING.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — As the report of the Cambridge Jockey Club meeting might lead some of the public astray regarding the motives of the committee of the Waikato Turf club in changing the date of their meeting to January, will you kindly allow me space to state the facts. There has hem a feeling among a number of members of the W.T. Club for a long time back that the Olub should take 'the opportunity of the presence in Auckland of the best horses from the South, and hold their meeting at a time that would enable them to come ts this district, which could be only done by holding our meeting immediately after that of Auckland, as in February they would all have left for Southern engagements. The committee also thought it likely that the President of the Club would be enabled to attend the meeting in January, and were naturally anxious to have the honor of his presence upon the occasion. Regarding our clashing with the Cambridge . Meeting-, I may stato that Mr Robert Kirkwood waited upon me and wished to know if the committee of the Waikato Turf Club would have any objection to the Cambridge Jockey Club holding thenmeeting the day before ours, and- Unformed him that as far as I knew they had not the slightest objection, and further in reply pledged the committee of the Waikato Turf Club not to alter tho advertised date of meeting. It is very strange that in reports of meetings held by the Cambridge Club no reason has been brought forward to show how our change of date could injure the Cambridge Meeting. 4 11 the raoing men I haye^ spoken to on the subject are of ' opinion that the change could only benefit the Cambridge Meeting, by bringing more horses, more people, and consequently more money into the district. The attempts made in ydney and Auckland to run two Jockey Clubs utterly failed, and it is not likely to be successful in a new and thinly populated district. — I am, &c., Kbwnedy ill, Hon, Sec. •' aikato Turf Club.
