WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of tho. abovo Council was held at Ohaupo on Tuesday, the 9th inst. Present: Crs. Buttle (Chairman), Reynolds, Steele, Hadfield, Corboy, Aubin, Cunningham, and Germann. The minutes of last meeting having been read and confirmed, the correspondence was read. A letter was received from the Hamilton Borough Council, asking if the Waipa, County i ouncil would send the punt, now m use at Whatawhata, to Pukete, m , which case the one from Hamilton would be placed at their disposal for Whatawhata. On the motion of Cr. Hadfield, seconded by Or. Cunningham, the clerk was instructed to acknowledge receipt of letter, and at same time to write to the Minister for Public Works, requesting that the Hamilton punt be placed at the disposal of this county for use at Whatawhata, as it appeared from a letter laid on the table that it was not the property "of tho tlamilton'Borough. CLOSING BOADS. An application was received from the Pukekura District Board, asking this Counoil to take the necessary steps for closing roads m that district. Proposed by Cr. Reynolds, seconded by Cr. Steele, " That a special meeting bs held at 9.45 a.m. on the seuond Tuesday m Febuary, for the purpose of considering the question." MANGIPIK: > BHIDGE. A. letter was received from thje Mangipiko District Board m answer to one writteu by the cler* of this Council, requesting that body to furnish a statement of monies expended by them on the above bridge. A sum of £50 having been placed at their disposal for repairs to the said bridge some months since (the half of which was charged to the Alexandra Town Board). s the information asked for was not furnished, the clerk, was inatrucfced, on the motiou of Cr. Aubin, seconded by Cr. LANDS. A committee having been appointed to enquire as to advisability of certain lauds being sold, Cr. Germ-mu submitted the following report: — "To the Chairman, Waipa County Council. " Sir,— l have to report to you that I have mado due inquiries with respect to lauds m the pirish of Ngaroto, which tho Waste Lands Board as ed about, audVWl that lots 292 and 293 are mostly swamp. Lots 346 and 347 are covered with goodtimber, but were sold at 30s per acre m 1876 to Mv fc. W. Mellars, and a few weeks afterwards were sold to Mr Gubbins at the same price, Mr Mellars having the right to out timber for 14 yeara. Lots 316, 317, and 339 are principally swamp. I am, &c , "F. C. Gebmann, " One of the Committee." .Cr. Cunningham reported as follows: — " Having been appointed on a committee to repoit on the advisability of certain lands m the parish of Puniu being put up for sale, I am of opinion that it would be for the advantage of the district that the following: allotments be put up for sale, viz., ,212, 213, 214, 21S, 219, situate at Te Kapa, and 46, 47, 48, 49, and 50, situate at .Orakau, and that .No. 108 at Orakau be retained as a reserve, it beinw the only piece of dry land m the possesion of the Government m that locality. "James Ouxmmm&it. " Waipa County." Cr. Steele thought it would be better to recommend tl# no^e be sold, as the swamp would fgtch little or nothing, and the bush wQuld become valuable. Cr. Reynolds said some lands would deteriorate m value m consequence of tho encroachment of gorse — Ultimately Cr. Germann moved, " hat the lands m tho parishes of Ngaroto and Puniu, about which Waste Lands Board inquired, should, m the opinion of this Council, be temporarily reserved, i,t being unfit forsettlement, and would bring very little money if put upon the market now. > seconded by Cr. Steele and ca.ried, license fees. In accordance with "notice given at last meeting, Cr. An.hl u mov<K i. « That the halt of all hcense fees be returned to the different districts m which they were collected, —Seconded by Cr. Corboy. Or, Cunningham said he believed m going the whole animal, and would movo as an amendment, « That all the monies received from license fees be given to the districts m which they were collected." The amendment not being seconded, the origin,.! motion was put, with the following result ;— For the motion : Crs. Aubin,

Cunningham, Corboy. Against: Crs. Steele, Rpynolds, Hadfiehl, Germnnn, Buttle. The motion was therefore lost. BETUBNING OFFKEBS' FEES Cr. Germann proposed, "That the reeolution fixing the fees of Returning Officn-9 be rescinded, and that a fresh scale of fees be fixed."— Seconded by Cr. Hadfield, and carried. Moved by Cr. Germann, "That m future the fees of Retuvniug officers bo : — For attending to receive nomination when no candidate is proposed, £1 Is ;.for uncontested election, £2 2s ; for contested election, £3 3s. Each Deputy Returning Officer to be paid £1 Is for each day's attendance at a poll."— Seconded by Cr. Hadfield, and carried. The Clerk was instructed to notify each Returning Officer of the alteration. WASTE LANDS. Cr. Aubin gave notice of motion for next meeting, " That the Government be requested to cause all waste lauds and reserves within tho county of Waipa to be vested m this Council, with full power to deal therewith." VALUATOBS. Cr. Steele proposed, "That all Highway Boards be requested to furnish this Council with copies of their respective assessment lists at the same rate as paid last year. In any case where the local valuer refuses to supply it, the Chairman of this Council to have full power to take such steps as he may deem best." — Seconded by Cr. Reynolds, and carried. OLEBKBHIP. *T:he following tenders were then opened ior ths office of Clerk and Treasurer for the current year :— N. T. Maunder, £30 ; Wells, £50 ; Turner, £40, with extras for special meetings, &c." Proposed by Cr. Cunningham, "That Mr Maunders tender be accepted." — Seconded by Cr. Germann. Cr. Corboy proposed as an amendment, " That Mr Wells be re-appointed." Ihe work of the Council had been done m a very satisfactory manner during the past year, and he (Cr. Corboy) thought it bad policy to chans-e Clerks every year. The amendment, having been seconded by Cr. Aubin, was put to the meeting with the following result: — For amendment: Crs. Corboy, Aubin, Hadfield. A gainst ». Crs. Buttle, Germann, Steele, Cunningham, Reynolds. The motion having been put and carried, Mr Maunder was declared duly elected Clerk and Treasurer for current year. On the motion of Cr. Reynolds, seconded by Cr. fcteele, Crs. Buttle, Aubin, and the Treasurer were appointed to sign cheques. Proposed by Or. Heynolds, "That no extra payment bo made to the Clerk during the present year." — Seconded by Cr. Hadfield, and carried. On the motion of Or. Germann, it was voted that the late Clerk be paid one months' salary for work done since termination of year. Accounts amountig to £17 5s 9d were passed and ordered to be paid.
