TUHIKARAMEA.

Aa? a meeting of our District Highway Board held on Saturday, the 29th November, it Tvas decided to call for tenders from authorised surveyors for the survey of Clarke's road (or that portion of it which traverses this district), to be completed m such a manner as to satisfy the requirements of the Act, and enable the Board to get it gazetted. The Secretary was also instructed to write to the Newcastle' District Board, reciuesting 1 that body to finish. theil 1 povfcion of the same road. This is a very necessary work, as till it is completed the road ia useless. Last Whatawhata sale day a number of Harapepe settlers came that way, and were considerably annoyed to find, when they had. nearly reached their destination, that they had to retrace their steps for some distance. It seems a pity that our Newcastle friends did not accept the offer of this district to do that portion, instead of insisting on the sum of £80 being handed over to them for that purpose, as had it cost another £50 our

local body would have carried the work through. Instructions were also given, that letters bo addressed to the Rangiaohia and Mangapilri District Boards, asking them to make their respective portions of the road which passes through Mr Gubbm's property to Ohaupo, the opening of which would bo a great boon to residents on this side of the country. Tenders were opened for claying a pieoo of swamp road near the property of Mr Whyte ; that of Mr Kobert Drabble, at la per yard, was accepted ; also for the erection of a pound, Mr R. Carter being the successful tenderer at a lump sum of £10. The very favorable weather with which we have been favored for some time has vastly improved our grass sown roads. I am happy to. say our school is now m full swing under the charge of Mr A* Douglas, there being twenty-two children on the roll, and a very creditable average attendance. — [Correspondent.]
