CHRiSTCHTJRCH, Thursday. The piesent fourth of the month is hot passing over very cheerily m Christchurch, and squeezes are said to have been both numerous and heavy. At the meeting of the Canterbury Cricket Association it was decided to fix the dale for the annual match with Otago for January 24. It was stated there no probability of a Victorian team coming this season. It was decided to write to "Wellington, asking if an eleven would be sent down this season, and the pos-. sibility of a Canterbury team playing a combined New Zealand eleven was also mooted, but nothing settled. „ Haymaking is m full swing m the Ashburton district, »nd should the weather prove fine a few days splendid crops will be stacked, m prime condition. Around Chertsey the crops of barley are m full ear, and are looking well.

During the sharp frost of Monday morning, cold as low as 20-6 Fahrenheit was registered.

The Mayor, at the request of the nnem ployed, comunicated with various chairmen of highway boards m ■ country districts around Auckland, and also with contractors . having works m progtess. and was assured that m East Tamiki and Mangere districts there will be employment m three weeks time for about 300 men to assist m the wheat harvest, and that taking the whole of the districts within a moderate range of Auckland, something like 500 men will be required for two months' work. Mr Fallon, contractor, of Ohaupo, states that m a few days he can employ twenty grood labourers.
