At the Borough Council election yesterday, all tlie ladieg on the burgesses roll, four m number, recorded their votes.
The Eev. W. H. Jones will conduct divine service m the Presbyterian Churoh, Ngaruawahia, at 11 a.m. on Sunday next, and at 3 p.m. at Whatawhata.
The Hamilton Bridge. — A public meeting of the inhabitants of Cambridge is oalled for Saturday next to urge upon the Government the desirability of making the Hamilton Bridge free of toll.
A Bouquet op Sweet Williams. — Three candidates were nominated on Tuesday for the two vacant peats m the Hamilton Borough Council, namely, Messrs William Gumming, William Davis, and William Jones.
.Waikato Settlers should lose no time m sending m their names as Subscribers to the Waikato Hand-book. The subscription list will be shortly closed, and we feel sure that we are only doing fanners and business man alike a service by advising cveiy bonajiile resident who has a stake m the Waikato to become subscribers before th/ 3 work is sent to press. The subscription is £1, and descriptions of farm?, stock, and business properties should be forwarded at once to tlie office of this paper.
Shobthobn Bulls for Cambsidge. —Bell's Weekly Messenger of the 22 September Jast says;— Particulars of a shipment of five shorthorn bulls and one heifer by the ship Inglewdod, which recently sailed from the London Docks for New Zealand, hare appeared m the columns of one or two of our contemporaries. The cattle belong to Messrs. Maclean and Co., who have extensive herds m Auckland. Four of the bulls wer© bought privately of Mr E. Loder, of Whittlebury, and of these two are Wild Eyes Bulls, both by Get nd Duke 22nd one out of Velvet Eyes, bred by Colonel Kingscote. The third, Oxford Eoyal, is by Third Duke of Gloucester from Tenth Maid of Oxford, Tho .other bull from Whittlebury is Buron Treguriter, by 7th Duke of Tregunter out of Grand Duchess of Fawsley 3rd. The fifth bull and the heifer arc closely allied m blood, being of the Holker Oxford Rose tribe, and both by Seventh Duke of Gloucester!
A public meeting of the ratepayers of the Pukekura Highway District was held m the Fukcrimu schoolroom on Saturday, the 22nd November, to take into consideration whether the roads as advertised should be stopped. A quorum of ratepayers being present, the Chairman read the advertisemext calling the meeting 1 ; also, the Nos. of the lots through which the road passed. No. 1, application by Mr Lake, running through lots .508, 3 1 0, 3 1 1, 3 1 3, Te Rapa. Proposed by Mr Joseph Grane, seconded by Mr James Scott, "That the road running through the above lots be closed." Carried unanimously. The second application was also from Mr Lake, re the road running lots 307, 309, 313, 314, 315, 319, 322, 329, 330. Proposed by Mr Edward Lake, seconded by Mr Wm. Scott, and carried — "That this road also be! closed." The third application was also made by Mr Lake, with regard to the road running through lots 319, 321, 322, 323, 324, 325, 326a, 327, 332a. 333a, and 334, Te Rapa. Proposed by Mr Henry Buttle, seconded by Mr George Watson, and carried, unani.mously, "That the road through the above lots be closed." The fourth application, re the road running through lots 318, 320, 321, 332a, 332, and 338, Te Kapa, was also from Mr Lake. Proposed by Mr P. Cooper, seconded by Mr J. Grane, "That this road, also be closed." Carried unanimously. The fifth application was made by Mr Wm. Scott, for the stoppage of road through lots 3 and 4, Pukekura. Proposed by Mr Joseph Chine, seconded by Mr E. Lake, " That the road running through the above lots be closed." Carried unanimously. The sixth application was made by Mr John Fisher, re a road running through lots 7 and 8, Pukekura. Proposed by Mr E. Lake, seconded by Mr Wm. Scott, and carried unanimously, " That the road running through the above lots bo closed."
Pkofessor b'BASBR gave his first lecture on phrenology on Tuesday ni^ht m Ngaruawahia to a good audience, and certainly a most attentive ono. The subjoct chosen
was, " What is Phrenology ?" Professor Fraser will lecture m Hamilton on Wednesday next.
Waikato Tukv Club Races. — Upcountry members of the Waikato Turf Club can obtain tickets for J 879-80 on application, to the Messrs Rutherford or Mr J. K.Roche.
At a meeting of the Trustees of the Pnkekura Iligway Board, held at the Pukerimu schoolroom on Saturday last, there were present — Messrs W. Reynolds, Fleming, and the Chairman The following teiulors for works as advertised wore received and opened : — For cutting at Walker's Gully : F. W. Reynolds and party, 5d per cubic yard, and 7d for oxtras; William Reynolds (Ohaupo), 5d per cubic yard, and G-Jrd. for extras ; Giles Koely, 7id per cubic yard ; Kobt. Nickle, 8d per cubic yard ; Richard Norriah, s^-d per cubic yard. For earthwork and drain on O'Neill and Watson's road : George Kinnerly, earthwork, Is 3d per oubic yard, drain, 6s per chain ; J. Kennedy, Is Id per cubic yard, Gs per chain; F. O'Neill, lOd per cubic yard, 6s per chain ; R. Norrish, lOd per cubic yard, 5s per chain; Giles Keely, ll|d per cubic yard, and 4d per cubic yard. Proposed by Mr Scott, seconded by Mr Fleming, and carried, " That the tender of H. Norrish be accepted for earthwork at lOd per cubic yard, and 5s per chain for drain." Prdposed by Mr Scott, seconded by Mr Reynolds, and carried, " That the tender of Wm. Reynolds (Uhaupo) be accepted for cuttings at Walker's Gully, at 5d per cubic yard, and 6£d per cubic yard for extras. Several accounts were received and passed to the amount of £58 10s Bd. It was resolved, " That the Chairman, m conjunction with one of the Trustees, be authorised to pass any works and pay the amounts due without the necessity of calling a meeting."
This Racecourse, To-morrow. — Mr Bartleet Langbridge wil be on the Ohaupo Racecourse to-morrow for the purpose of enrolling subscribers for the Waikato Hand-book. The pamphlet will contain a special chapter descriptive of Waikato noted racing and stud stock, sheep and cattle. To-morrow will be nearly the laat opportunity settlers will have of handing m their names as subscribers as the pamphlet will shortly go to press. The subscription is £1, which includes a description of the subscribers property, land, or business and a dozen hand-books.
Hamilton Bmdge. — A meeting of the residents of the Te Awamutu district is called for Saturday next, at the Public Hall,'Te Awainutu, to consider the propriety of urging the Government to make the bridge at Hamilton a free bridge.
Protective Works to the Bridge.;s— A telegram was received by the acting Mayor yesterday from the Mayor at Wellington, stating that he had seen the Minister for Works m reference to the necessity for protective works to. the bridge piers, that Mr Blanchett, the JKngiueer-in-Chief, had been consulted, and that that gentleman's opinion was that the works were not only necessary, but should be proceeded with at one«.
