WAIKATO TURF CLUB SPRING MEETING AND ANNUAL CAVALRY REVIEW.
It is anticipated that there will be a large gathering from all parls of the district, as well as from Auckland, to witness the two above popular events. It will be observed elsewhere, that for the principal events io the racing programme there are an equal number of horses entered in Waikato, and from Auckland, ten in all, and as the handicap is considered a good one, there are likely to be a number of acceptors. For the Cavalry Plate and'Tnrf Club Handicap, the entries are as good as could be expected, and we anticipate seeing both races, closely contested. In the hurdles, Sportsman will meet Artful Joe, a horse which if able to .negotiate our timber, ought to make our favorite put his best leg foremost. •. The Cavalry since last annual inspection have greatly increased in number, and onr Auckland visitors, we aro sure, will agree with us in thinking, that a finer body of men or horses could not, be brought together in the colony. A great deal of disappointment has been occasioned by the action of the railway, authorities, who have, despite all representations, declined to issae return tiokets for Waikato stations earlier than Friday, the day the races come off. This is so manifestly rendering the issue of return tickets at all a useless act, that we are surprised the representations made by the Club have not received more favorable consideration. Persons attending the races and using the railway at all would need fo Arrive'by Thursday's train. Few would care to stop at Rukuhia j and cross the. swamp to she race-
course, and few would feel satisfied to arrive at either Hamilton or Ohaiipo about the hour the races commence, and the icview is over, and then after a long journey from Ackland, perhaps, make their way from either station to. the racecourse. We trust that the railway management will at onoe reconsider the matter, and make the return tickjts available from the Thursday to tbe Tuesday. Since the arrangement wns made, the review, and the rncomeeting as a consequence, has been ordered to be held a day earlier, and we do not see but that the railway • arrangements might have been altered also to aoit the circumstances of the case; for the issue of return tickets makes no change in the time of departure of the trains, simply entailing the addition of another carriage or two. We hope to see a large turn out on Friday next, and that every one will enjoy themselves.
