HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

An adjourned meeting of the Council was held again last night, to consider the levying of tolls on the new bridge. Present — Urs. Vialou, McDonald, Beale, Knox, and Peat. A letter was read from the Engineer, asking that a meeting of the Council be called for Friday, as the contractors would then be ready to hand over the bridge. It was decided by the Council that the letter was informal, being addressed to the Town Clerk, and that before taking the bridge over the extras should be finished, and tb.3 work be certified toby the Government Engineer. It was estimated that tolls to the extent of £800 a-year would need to be raised. Cr. Beale proposed, and Cr. Peat seconded—" That the tolls be as follows : — For N every vehicle and one horse, Is ; for every extra horse, 6d; for every saddle horse, Gd ; for every foot passenger, Id horned cattle, 3d ; sheep, pigs, or goats, It was unanimously resolved that the toll-house be fixed on the east side of, the river. " '„"■''.• The difficulty of taking tolls during the first month the tolls not having been advertised for a month, was raised, and Crs. McDonald and Knox advocated the; plan of giving the ferry lessee charge of the bridge, and allowing passengera to go across if they pay ; if they refuse to pay, to turn them back to the ferry. Cr. Vialou deprecated the plan as attempting to evade the .act. Cr. Beale suggested that till the month was past people should not be allowed to use the bridge, and a policeman be stationed there to prevent them going across. * Cr. Knox aaid it was monstrous that the bridge should be there ready for use, and the public not be allowed to use it. Cr. McDonald thought so too. The tolls as above proposed were then finally passed.
