CAMBRIDGE BRANCH RAILWAY.

A pubho meeting was held at Cambridge on Saturday last m the public hall to urge upon the Government the desirability of at once proceeding with the construction of the branch railway to Cambridge. Mr R. H. D. Forgusson was voted to the chair, and having read the advertisement convening the meeting, said it was hardly necessary for him to make any remarks, as the matter has been so fully discussed before. He therefore called on Mr 8. S. Graham to move tho first resolution. Mr S. S. Graham proposed and Mr Heed seconded, " that this meeting is of opinion that it would be conducive to the welfare of the districts of Tamahere, Cambridge, Taotaoroa, . Pukekura and Pnkerimu that the branch line to Cambridge m connection ' with tho ThamesWaikato line of railway should be at once proceeded with, and that the large in*

croaso of 'traffic thereby created would materially assist m improving the'payiug capabilities of tho Kaipara- fuuui railway and of the projected Thames-Waikato line." Carried- unanimously. Mr J. P. Campbell proposed and Mr W. h. C. Williams seconded, "That as the projected Cambridge branch proceeds through level country aud would" be constru ted at a small expense, this meeting requests the Government to" place a suni on the estimates for the purposefcof such construction.'* Carried unanimously. . , Mr George B. Clark proposed and Mr Williams seconded, " That the foregoing resolutions be handed to Mr Fergusson, and that ho bo requested to proceed to Wellington to interview Ministers with reference to the proposed branch railway, and that these resolutions be telegraphed immediately to the members for Waikato and Waipa. ' . Mr Wells, Eeed, Campbell and Clark spoke m support of the resolution. Mr Bright considered it an unnecessary expense to send Mr Fergusson to Wellington. They had Moses and the prophets m the shape of the Hon. F. Whitalf er and his son, Mr F. \ . Whitaker and Mr J. B. Whyte, and if they do not hear those gentlemen, neither would they be persuaded if all of them went down. After some further discussion the resolution was put and carried, two only voting against it. - A vote of thanks was then passed to the chairman and the meeting closed.
