CHRISTCHURCH.
Monday. Dr. Nedwill, who has been appointed permanent health officer m place of J ir. Powell, reported to the Board of Health to-day two cases of typhoid fever m one family. These were of ' children, who had been employed m sweeping out one of tha public schools, where the drainage was m a teiribly bad st^te. Dr Nedwill was inclined to put the origin of the disease to this, but happened to think of visiting the dairj from which they obtained their milk. Here, he found that there was an artesian well within fifty yards of : the place, but that a stinking creek ran through it, and he hints m his report that it ig quite possible infected milk was the cause of tho outbreak. His remarks on , the state of the school grounds were particularly strong, and he advised the board to have the school shot np till proper arrangements w b re made, bnt the school authorites have m t he meantime had the evils complained of remidied. The Board of Health having no powers over the dairies simply regretted they could do uothing m the matter.
