The Waikato Times

Equal and exact justice to all men, Of whatever fltate or persuasion, religious or political. Her© shall the Press the People's jfight maintain, Unawedby inflnenco and unbribed hy gain. /* TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, .1879. Party strife has died out m the House, and Parliainenl has settled steadi'y «down to business. The second reading of what are known as the Liberal measures took place on Friday night and early on Saturday morning, their passage beinsf evidently a foregone conclusion with both Government dad Opposition, scarcely any debate taking place, and that of a mere formal character. On the secpnd reading 1 , of course the principles only of the measure would be discussed, and all sides of the House are agreed upon them. If anything like a lively debate does occur it ■will be when matters of detail arc gone into m committee. Members, however, seem more inclined to work than talk, for soon there will be' a difficulty m keeping the House together. As it is, many have paiied and left for the Souih, and it is. thought that the end of the month will see the session brought to a close. The question, however, which would appear to carry greatest, interest, both inside and outside the Houso, is that of finance and the change m the incidence of taxation which will be rendered necessary, and, much us the Liberal measures have been paraded as a hustings cry, the. financial and Public Works Statements will after all be found to be the centre oq which public interest will be fixed.
