WAIKATO COURSING CLUB.
Tiie first meet at Cambridge was held on Friday and Saturday, October 24th and 2ofch at Broadmadows aud surrounding farms. Mr Walluutt acted as judge. Messrs Robert Fisher, Jared Alhvill, B. Hewitt, R. Kirkwood, and Dr Waddington were the stewards and Mr Charles H itchman, slipper. Thirteen entries were received by the secretary on Thursday eveniug, and all came into the field. At tho paddock of Mr J. Taylor the first hare was started by the beaters. R. Fergussons's Ivanhoe and Lcnora being first in the slips. This was a grand course, both taking a wire fence in splendid style, the judge could not follow, aud the hare ran out of sight over a hill aud was kilied, and the judge had to pronounce the course undecided. McCabe's Pell Mell and Regent (nominated by R. Kirkwood) took next course. This was also a good run and decided in favor of Pell Mell. McCabe's Piufire and McDonald's Metre took the third course, and Piufire scoring most points was adjudged the winner. The first course was then run again between Ivanhoe and Lenora. '1 he hare was started in Broadmcadows and gave a splendid course. Ivanhoe ran right away from the black bitch and after a vary prety run he killed amid great excitement. ,Wheelen's Snider and All will's Hero ran the next course, the former being tho winner by a grand run. Wheelen's Belle and Percivai's Princess ran together, tho latter killing and winuiug. Lord Chancellor (nominated by J. Forgusson) and McCabe's Susan took next turn in the slips and Susan was adjudged winner. It was the turn of Hewitt's Rifleman for tho course being a bye for the odd dog. But this was g" von him by the competitors without running. Ivanhoe and Pell vt O U ran another course which was undecided, Pinfire and Snider ran afterwards and after a good course killed. Pinfire won this course, McCabe's Susan and Rifleman ran the last course of the first clay. This was spoilt by two othe.x dogs breaking looso and joining in, this was therefore undecided.
The first day's coursing had lasted fpom about D a.m till 5 p.m. Hares were plentiful, but not sufficiently so to finish the match. There was a large field of spectators numbering about one hundred and fifty who were extremely orderly and well behaved in spite of bread and cheese and beer being supplied by the stewards ad libitum. This day's coursing was pronounced by some old sports present to be one of the grandest they had witnesed in the colony or out of it, About 10 a.m. on Saturday morning the coursing party left Cambridge for the same ground. The beaters goon turned
out a haro for Princess, whoso turn it was to run a bye. The have was lulled after a I good run. ivanhoe and Pell Melt were to be the next match, but the latter being lamo was scratched, and Ivanhoe ran a bye. The slips'were next put upon Kifienian and Susan, and ran a csiuye which was given undecided. They ran again, with tho same unsatisfactory result. Ivanhoe and Piufire now ran together. This was. a grand course. Piufire took the lead and gave tho hare fist turn. Ho then gave Ivanhoe a go-bye and the latter then had it all his own w!ay, and after a long run killed. This was scored to Ivanhoe. Another hare was soon timed out of tho tL-tree, the slipper having in hand Rifleman and Susan. They got away together beautifully, and Rifleman soon took the lead, and on roaching some rushes Susan was quite out of it. After sor/'.o timo a hare was turned out on Mr AllwiU's farm, rnd Ivanhoo and Princess Avcre slipped together, the clog got the start by jumping two fences in splendid style, tho bitch loosing ground by crawliug tnrough. 'i his was not a vory satisfactory course, but it could bo given to no other that Ivanhoe The match now lay between Ivanhoe and Rifleman, the two local dogs. Princess taking third prize. "Before, however, they could run together, Rifleman had to run a bye, which he did with a bitch of Forgusspn's (Venus), which had not been entered. Thjs was a grand course, hifleman lost the hare at first, but the bitch stuck well to her and doubled her back to Rifleman, who ran in again and killed. After several vain attempts to get another course the stewards decided to run off tho last on Monday, as it was nearly dark. Fivejhares were killed the first day, three the second.
