HARAPEPE.

Oetober, 22nd. The sale of the Government land in the Pirongia district (a subject that was brought rather prominently before the public some time back), is about vs for off as it ever was. After a great deal of red tape and officialism, a ••ovemment surveyor was sent up to survey the land; a job that lasted him and his assistants some six months or more. As soon as he had finished, another surveyor was sent up to inspect, who stated that it is all wrong, and now the job is to be done over again. A lot of this land could have been sold years ago, if it had not been for the humbugging system that the late Government have seen fit to adopt; in fact, people are wantinjr to buy some of it now, and cannot. Th's is a small sample of . Q ir George Grey's system of the land for the people, and the people for the land ; and, in the meantime, the Road Board are losing the rates on it, as there are no rates to be had on Government land, -v great deal of this land was bought by tho Government from one of those dreadful Auckland laudsharks, avlio always paid the rates on it, something like £2O per annum. Mr Briton (tho contractor) paid tis a visit last week, to inspect the proposed sites of the Te Rore bridge, but at present nothing can be done, as the funds in hand are not sufficient. In point of cost, he is in favour of the lower site, as it will require a much shorter bridge. The weather for the past week or two lias been very favourable for farm work, and almost all the crops are in in this district. There is more land planted with potatoes this year than in any previous year, and the same remark applies to all other districts in Waipa and Waikato, and If there is anything like an avorago crop, potatoes will be very cheap this season. Potatoes seem to be the favourite crop here, several that made the attempt to grow wheat, I notice do not try it a seoond time. —Own Correspondent.
