THE MEMBER FOR WAIPA AND THE PRESENT CRISIS.
1 Sib,— An unsound argument has never yet injured a good cause, nor helped a bad one. My opinion therefore if erroneous, concerning the. recent conduct of the member for Waipa in ! -Parliament will have little weight, i nevertheless I desire, with your permission, to place it on record. I certainly thi:;k that Mr Whitaker carried out his pledge to "Work with tho Auckland members for Auckland's benefit," in a vrry original manner indeed, After throwing out of offico— for his vote virtually accomplished it, the only Government that for the last ten years has shown tbe slightest desire to do justice to Auckland. He now coolly asks the Southern land princes whom he has helped to power to fork out £200,000 for our benefit. He might as well have asked, and he well knows it, for a good slice of the moon; Poor Auckland, though, the end is not yet; yet, whatever turn the political kaleidoscope may take, Southern influence and Southern predominance, hitherto kept in check for a short time, will not be diminished, but rather strengthened by whatever combination may eventually result from the present political boil over. And is the member for Waipa blameless for this untoward result, I leave his constituents to answer the question.— l am, &c, W. Johns. T*< Awamutu, October 13, 1879. [What Auckland had to expect from .the late Ministry may be gathered from the experience of the past two years, and from the Governor's opening speech of the present session, where Auckland interests and Auckland wrongs appear to be forgotten altogether.
