The Members of the Council were much . pleased with Mr Whitaker's courteous conduct m thus addressing them. The i.lork was instructed to acknowledge the letter, with thanks, and there is little doubt they will be able to find him plenty • of work. HOSPITAL. A letter was received from the Waikato County Council, stating that the delegate from that body, to confer m the matter of establishing a Central Hospital m Waikato, after due consideration of all the evidence offered m support ( of the movement, had' come to the con- , elusion that, at present, it would be injudicious to attempt starting ?uoh an establishment. The letter further suggested that Government should be iirged to amend the system at present practised of debiting local bodies with per centage on subsidy, and substitute a , charge per head for patients received. A proposition to the same effect was made . at the last meeting of this Council, by Cr. Germann. NABBOAVS BRIDGE. 1 A communication was also received 1 from the Waikato Council, stating that body had Toted a sum of £40 towards 1 liquidation of the debt on the above bridge, and inviting this council to do the same, also asking which County should have control of the bridge. Considera--1 tion of this matter was left over for next | ordinary meeting. KESIGNATION OF MEMBER. A letter was received from W. Sloane, Esq.j of Te Awamutu, tendering his resignation as a Member of this Council. The letter not being quite m accordance with the provisions of the Act, the Clerk was ordered to acknowledge its receipt, and respectfully to request Mr Sloane, if he still wished to resign, to amend it. NGABTTAAVAHIA LIBRARY An application was received from R. R. Hunt, Esq.,' on behalf of the Ngaruawahia Library Committee, for a donation from the ("ouncil. The matter was deferred till the. next ordinary meeting. APPROACHES TO BAILAVAY. In accordance with not-ce given at last meeting, Cr. Steele proposed, " That a memorial be presented to the Minister for Public Works,' urging the necessity of making approaches to the various Railway Stations between Ngaruawahia and Te Awamutu, fit to sustain traffic, and not place the responsibility on the shoulders of local bodies, for the following reasons : (1) Tor the avoAved purpose of economy m its first construction, the railway was taken along swampy land, and is inaccessible till such approaches are made.' (2) The making of these roads would be far too costly an undertaking for local boards, with their limited means, to attempt. (3) That the County of "Wnipa, being a narrow strip with thft line of railway running from end to end, ratepayers therein would be unfairly taxed to make these roads out of public spirit for the benefit of surrounding Counties, and to promote railway traffic." Cr. Steele further suggested that the memorial respectfully state that it would really have been much cheaper to have avoided the swamp, as by the time roads are made a heavier abstract outlay will have been incurred ; and till such roads are constructed the traffic returns must necessarily be much less than they would have been, had the line been carried through where access could have been grot to it. At present, many people ■who live within two or three miles of the railway, have to go four times the distance to get to it on account of the swamp. The Council thon proceeded to the business for which this meeting 1 had been specially called, viz., the consideration of various clauses m the Counties Act, which, m their opinion, could be advantageously amended, and it Avas arranged that a petition be forwarded to the Colonial Secretary, praying that the matter may bo brought before tho House, during the present Session. ALTERATION OF BOUNDARIES. Cr. Buttle moved, "That the Tlerk write to the Chairmen of tho several Highway Boards m the County, inviting each Chairman, and one other member of each District Board, to attend a meeting of this Council, to be held on the 28th of October, to take into consideration the desirability of so amending the boundaries of the several Highway Districts, that J each district may have control over the road between it and the railway." The motion was seconded by Cr. Hadfield, and agreed to. '
