Mn L. B. Harris was m Hamilton, on Tuesday, with a petitiou to the Minister of Justice, asking that the " quality o 1 *" mercy" should be shown towards Peter Kny, of Ngaruawahia, who, some two months since, was committed before the Resident Magistrate (W. 11. Northcroft, Esq., and Mr Byron, J.P.), and fined for three, breaches of tho " frotectiou to Animals Act,'' the fines and costs amounting to somo £31 10s altogether. Defendant was unable to pay the fines, aud was, on tho 19th instant, sent to tho Mount Eden gaol, to undergo a sentence of two months imprisonment as an alternative. Tho petitioners allege that the punishment was excessive, aud as'< for a commutation of the sentence, or free pardon, as tho fe Minister of Justice may see fit. The petition will be forwarded to Wellington to-day, and will, doubtless,' be numerously signed ; even those who considered some punishment necessary, admitting that the few days imprisonment, whicli must necessarily ensue before a favorable reply can be received to the petition, will amply meet the requirements of tho case.
