If returned, I can only promise, that as heretofore, no exertion shall be wanting on my part to promote the general good of the district and the colony as a whole. GENTLEMEN,— It was my intention to stand again as a candidate for your district, and looking at the confidence that has hitherto existed between ns, it is with regret that I withdraw from that position. It has, however, been pressed on me that I have a fair claim on the city or suburbs m which I have now resided for nearly 4Q years and that, if I could find a seat for one of those districts, it would be agreeable to my friends m Waikato to return 'a local representative. Acting m accordance therefore with the advice of friends m both the district of Waikato and Eden I have offered myself for election for the latter constituency. Thanking you for the generous conj fidence and support you have hitherto given me permit me to add that as long as 1 am m the Parliament of New Zealand, I shall be ready to advocate the rights and promote'the interests of Waikato. GENTLEMEN,— Having been requested by a large number of my fellow-settlers and being influenced by the wish which I believe to be general that the district shouldbe'represented by a local , man, whose interests are identified with those of the people whom he represents I have determined to become a candidate for your suffrages at the coming election. It is my intention to address the electors at the various centres of population, place, date and hour to be advertised, when my views wiil be fully explained. In the meantime, however, as reports are being industriously circulated (I presume for electioneering purposes) prejudicial to my candidature, I wish to state emphatically that I am quita independent of, and will not bo influenced by any clique or ring. Also, that, although I cannot consent to be a blind follower of any party or man,! intend to support and endeavor to the best of my ability to have carried into effect the main features of the Liberal policy as enunciated by the present Government. Assuring you that whether as a member of the Houso of Representatives or as one of your fellow-settlers I shall always do my utmost for Waikato and endeavor at ail times to put power into the hands of the people— not to deprive them of it.
