TUHIKARAMEA.

August 27, 1879. At a public meeting of the residents m this district, held m the Ngahinapouri Schoolroom, on Saturday, the 9th inst., to consider what steps should be taken to get our school re-opened, Messrs F. J. Vickers and J. Wells were appointed a deputation, to wait upon the Education Board, and urge upon them the necessity for appointing ii teacher. Those gentlemen went to Auckland, last week, for that purpose, and, although, I am informed, they were not honored by being admitted to thc presence of that august assembly, I am happy to say they were so far successful as to get a promise that steps should at once be taken for making the necessary appointment. As we may soon expect to get better weather, and have, within the last week, got a fresh family m the district, with, I believe, the prospect of another new settler, m a very short time, I trust the attendance may be good enough to warrant our soon agitating for a teachers residence. I am informed the young lady of eccentric habits who did us tho honor of remaining four days m our midst, was afterwards appointed teacher m a school m the suburbs of Auckland, but as it was found necessary to employ a boy to keep her awake, and such a proceeding not conducing to good order m the school she was dismissed, and has now gone as governess iv a private family. The fine weather with which Aye have been favored during the past ten days or so has enabled settlers to start their spring ploughing, but the frosts are rather too sharp for the young grass. — Correspondent.
