WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual monthly -meeting of the above was held at the Royal Hotel, Hamilton Eist on Friday. last.
There were present : Ors. W. Steele, (Chairman), James Henry, W. L. Martyn, Robert Kirk wood, Peter Walker and J. B. Wh'yte.
The minutes of last meeting having been read and confirmed, correspondence since last meeting was read and a few small accounts pasjed and .ordered to be paid, amounting to £o 10s. ,A letter from Mr T. G. Sandes explanatory of aa authority given by him to Mr Sheppard to survey the road leading from Cook-street, Hamilton East to the Piako Swamp, was taken into consideration, aixl although the explanations given quite altered the apparent nature of the authority, the Conncil considered that Mr Sheppard's account was excessive, notwiihstaading the redactions made ac last meeting, and that they looked to Mr Sande? to obtain a further reduction.
The matter of Engineer and Surveyor services were discussed at some length, and the conclusion come to was that the arrangements were not on a sufficiently definite basis. Io was resolved to invite applications before next meeting from Engineers or Surveyors -for the performance ot such work as the*- Council 'nay. require at some fixed rate as far as si.iuh an arrangement is possible. The Chairman (Csptain Steele) reported that m accord:.-. nee with the. resolution of the Council he had proceeded to Auckland tho day after the' last meeting und h«,d h-uuled to* the Hon. Mr Frederick Whitaker, ■ M. H.R. for Waikato; the plans and specifications of the proposed branch line of railway* to connect the Thames Valley line with O-.m bridge together wish tho me.-noriai signed by members of County. Council-, and local bodies relative to the same.
Mr Whitakcr, Captain . Steele stated, had expressed hearty approval of tho scheme and desired him to inform the settlers of Cambridge, that no effort on his part would be wanting to induce the Government, and the House, to accede, to the prayer of the memorialists.
Thia Chairman stated that his attention had been called to the fact that Messrs B. and J. Coleman wore slaughtering cattle within the County without a license, and the Inspector of Slaughterhouses was directed to inform the Messrs Colemau m writing that if they did not take out a license within three clays from elate that the police would be instructed to proceed against them.
The Cleik was instructed to request the Rangiriri Rate Collector to take early stt-ps by legal process to recover overdua rates.
Upon a motion by Cr. Henry a sum of £5 was granted m aid of local contribution* to fence m tho Cemetery at Huntley, Or, I^irkwood stated that there appeared to bo some doubt as to whether the Publio Found at Cambridge was legally established. The Clerk stated that the institution had been publicly notified m accordance with law. However to make certain it was. resolved to proclaim part of allotment no s,S'k m Cambridge. North Township aud upon the recommendation of Mr J. P. Campbell, Mr Robert McYeagh was appointed Poun keeper the terms to be . arranged by the Cambridge 'J 'own Board under whose supervision the Pound will be managed on behalf of the County. i
