ALEXANDRA.

July 9th, 1879. Everything is still exceedingly dull here, with little news stirring. Mr Thomas Sandes was here last week for the purpose of laying out the road from Alexandra east to Pimm ; this*|is looked upon as a job, and of little or no benefit to the public generally, as it will benefit nono but Major Tc Whcoro's few . people who live on the Puniu, and they, it is said, are to have the formation of the road, and no less a sum than seven hundred pounds is to be expended on- it. I am informed that a public meeting is to be called on the matter, to call tiie' s Government's attention to the fact that the road will be of little service when finished, and also to the desirabitity of making a road on the Avest side of the river to the Maugaouika creek, the road most used by the natives, and where an almost unlimited supply of rough gravel could be obtained for metalling the roads of the whole district. Tawhaio, with his people, are at Hikurangi. The general impression appears to be that Rowi's negotiations with the Government, like Tawhiao's arc a most decided falure. They appear to have decided to remain m a complete state of isolation from the pakeha. At Kopua, a European, who was proceeding there on Monday last, was turned back by a lot of the young fellows, and wonld, m all probability, have lost his sway, but for the influence of a Maori of more liberal idois, who would not allow it. The present inclement weather is greatly increasing the prevalent sickness ittaongsi;

the natives, and a great numbor have fallon victims simply for the want of medical and proper attendance. Several have been brought down for medicine, m a most lamentable condition, from long distances. One woman, Taiporutu'a wife, died on Sunday last here, on the .bank of the river, at the landing place. Taiporutu is a chief of some consequence. — Own Correspondent.
