WELLINGTON, Thursday. THE BREAK IN THE CABLE. The break m the cable is believed to be about 3SO miles from Port Darwin. It is hoped that the cable will be repaired bySunday. A steamer, with telegraphs, is expected at Port Darwin to-day or tomorrow. An A.C. man at the front writes to a friend m Wellington : " One of the batch of Maoris brought down on the 6fch inst. told me there would be no more ploughing till the 18th inst., then Te Whiti himself would hold the ulough." HAWERA, Thursday. A public meeting was held hero tonight, _to consider a telegram received from Sir George Grey, m which ho states ho thought there were already sufficient Constabulary m the district. The opinion was expressed that there was not a sufficient force to protect the frontier, that Government should keep up a bold front, and that they should fulfill their promise to push on the railway between I-lawera and Normanby. It was ultimately resolved that Mr F. Maguire, and Mr J Lysaght, J. P., should proceed to Wellington, and interview the Government as to the existing situation. DUNEDLX, Thursday, The nomination of candidates for the vacant seat for Dunedin m the General Assembly was held this forenoon at 1 2 o'clock. There wore about 100 electors and non-electors present. Stewart was proposed by Mr r. Burfct, and seconded by Mr W TT AssoJl. J ' x ' Mr C. H. Reeves was proposed by Mr R. Wilson, and seconded by Capt. BaldMr J. G. Grant a local celebrity, was also proposed and seconded Mr Stewart declared distinctly against the Government. Ho was opposed to manhood suffrage, and m favor of a pro-
petty tax and law reform; and on the subject of education (which is regarded as the tost question of the contest) would support the reading: of the Bible m public schools. Mr C. S. Eeeves declared m favor of the existing system of education and the independent reading of the Bible. He should not say he Avould oppose the Govemment, for he might see it his duty, if returned, to support them, as he was m iavor of their liberal policy.
