Telegrams from Jerilderie state that a Kelly raid is expected there.
OPENING OP THE VICTORIAN
PARLIAMENT.
MELBOURNE, Jaly 8.
Parliament was opened by the Governor, who, m his speech on the occasion, said that the present was a very serious junctere, and the universally depressed state of trade was less here than elsewhere, but a beneficial change was apparent m agriculture and also m mining. The Prince of Wales's visit to the International Exhibition has been confirmed.
The Peninsular Contract was announced, with an increase of tax-
ation.
It is considered that the Government loan was a brilliant success.
It was hoped that the result of the mission to London would be satisfactory to the progress of legisletion.
The speech also announced the following* Bills : — Amendment to Land Tax, Reform of Constitution, with the object of securing- a final adjustment of the functions of the Council and the Assembly, and thus terminate the re-occur reuce of deadlocks. The Addiess m reply to the Speech, was carried without opposition
Mr Gaunson 's motion m the Assembly was withdrawn.
The Opposition mill not move an amendmeut to the Address.
The Catholic organs state' that the Catholics have abandoned their claim to a separate grant. /
