WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of the above was held at the Council Chambers, Hamilton East, on Friday last. There were present Crs. X.. H. D. Fergusson, Robert Kirkwood, Peter Walker, J. B. Whyte, and James Henry. The Clerk read the minutes of last meeting and correspondence of that date. One small petty cash account was passed and paid. The tender of Mr Message, for improving the Council Chambers, £98 10s, was accepted. The work to be finished within one calandar month. In the meantime the office of the Council will be at the residence of the Cleik, m Kirikiriroa. On a Motion by Gr. White, seconded by Or. Henry, it was resolved to "make a rate" of one shilling m the <£ on all rateable property within the Hangiriri Outdisfcrict, to be payable m one sum at the .office of the collector, Mr T. VFitzpatrick, Ngaruawabia, m fourteen days after date. In the matter of the proposed branch railway to Cambridge, the Clerk read a letter from Mr W. A. Graham, stating his inability to make a true survey before the middle of August, m consequence of his attendance being required at the Native Lands Court at Cambridge, and Tauranga. Or. Fergusson said that this had come to his knowledge, and as the work was required to be done, and the result transmitted to Wellington, at least a week before Parliament assembled., he had communicated with Mr Breakell, Civil Engineer to the Hamilton Borough Council, who had signified his willingness to make the survey and complete it within a month from the date of his receiving instructions. It was unanimously 'resolved to employ Mr Breakell, and the Clerk was instructed to notify acoordingly, the costs to be debited two-thirds to Cambridge and one-third to Kirikiriroa Riding, Or. Marty n suggested that the Council should indicate ronte to be taken by the line. By avoiding the large gulliea where expensive bridges would be reqaired, the expense of construction would be much reduced. Cv. Kirk wood reported that Messrs James and John Run ci man had agreed to assist m pointing out the best line of country, and it was resolved that these gentlemen, with Or. Martyn and Walker* meet Mr Broakell at the residence of v>r. Walker, at 8.30' a.m. on Wednesday, the I lth instan 1 , for the the purpose of consulting with the Engineer m the matter, and if necessary, to walk over the proposed line. The . bhat the Government subsidy to 30bh Juno current, amounting to £486 16s had been received, it waa resolved to appropriate £300 to. Kirikiriroa and .£2OO to Cambridge Riding. On, a motion by Cr. Whyte, seconded by Cr. Kirk wood, the Tatnahere Bridge was placed under the coutrol of the Kirikiriroa Highway Board. Cr. Kirk wood suggested as a means of preserving the road-way of the valuable bridge at Cambridge, to lay it with asphalt, but as some doubts were expressed as to the propriety of laying asphalt upon wood, it was considered better to defer the , question until the opinion of an Engineer could be obtained, this, Crs. Whyte and Kirkwood undertook to get m Auckland, to which place they were about to proceed by the afternoon train. This concluded the business of the meeting.
