THE SUBURBAN LANDS.
PUBLIC MEETING-. Ngaruawahia, June 2,1879. \ i.aeoelt attended meeting of settlers and residents of the township was held •at the Delta Hotel, on Saturday evening last, to request the Government to cause the suburban lands of'Ngaruawahia to be put up for sale; Mr E. Fitzpatriek was voted to the Chair, and, in a few introductory remarks, explained the object of the meeting. He said, that-, the different Governments had, from time to time, been petitioned to put the land into the market, but the everlasting cry was we have reserved it for the ftlaories. The Government had now, however, withdrawn their promises from the natives, relative to this land, and this excuse was cut from under their feet. They, the Government, had no excuse now, whatever, for keeping it shut out from competition in the market.
Mr C. J. Barton moved, and Mr Patterson seconded, "That in the opinion of this meeting, it is most desirable, in the interest of both town and district, that the Ngaruawahia and Horotiu suburban land be settled by bona fide settlers, and the better to insure this, the Minister for Lands be petitioned to dispose of the land in small blocks, ,to intending purchasers on some system of deferred payments! making improvements a condition to obtain a title." This proposition was carried unanimously. Proposed by Mr Hunt, seconded by Mr Lamb, "That the foregoing resolution be first sent to the Waste Lands Board, and failing their complying with the" request contained, that the resolution be then forwarded to the Minister of Lands " Carried.
Proposed and seconded, '«That the following gentlemen be appointed a committee (if necessary) to draw up a petition and obtain signatures, to be presented to the House of Representative, when Parliament meets, in the event of the G-overnmentref using their very reasonable demands, namely, Messrs Fitzpatrick, Lamb and Hunt."
The meeting, before breaking up, expressed the thanks of the people of Ngaruawahia, to the Waikato Times, for the manner in which that paper had, at different times, advocated their cause, respecting these lands, The, meeftng
then closed, and another one immediately formed, relative to the Court House build, ing. It was resolved that a committee be appointed to wait on the Minister of Justice, to point out to him the necessity for a new building, as the one now in use, when there is an interesting case being tried, as there was last Court day, would compare favourably with the Black Hole of Calcutta.—Own Coeeesfondent.
